"Voices of Imagination and Innovation" series to inspire audiences at BW
Baldwin Wallace University will bring accomplished "Voices of Imagination and Innovation" to campus as part of a 2018-19 cultural series inspired by creative leaders who enlighten thinking and transform the world around us.
Fall "Voices" events include an appearance by award-winning actor Sterling K. Brown of NBC's "This is Us" and a peek behind the curtain with the world-class innovators at The Cleveland Orchestra. A reading and reception with Ohio Poet Laureate Dave Lucas and talk by American comic strip creator and graphic novelist Tom Batiuk round out the fall schedule.
All events are free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

The Summit focuses on the challenges facing classical music and symphony orchestras in the 21st century and innovations that The Cleveland Orchestra (TCO) has implemented to reinvent and reimagine the orchestra experience. A collaboration between the BW Conservatory of Music, Center for Innovation & Growth (CIG), Arts Management & Entrepreneurship Program and The Cleveland Orchestra, this fourth annual summit kicks off BW's year-long residency with TCO.

Dave Lucas is on a mission to "expand the definition of poetry and help people see poetry in everyday life ... to celebrate poetry as we encounter it in song lyrics, and conversations and metaphors and slang and jokes, and all of the ways in which we use language that are not purely functional." Emmy Award-winning actor Sterling K. Brown will share his journey from business major to history-making actor and discuss topics from the power of creativity to invigorate innovation, to the essential nature of the arts to illuminate the human condition, to the importance of diverse voices in the media. Brown currently plays Randall Pearson in NBC's award-winning, hit series "This is Us." His portrayal has earned him a raft of accolades for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series including the Emmy, SAG, NAACP Image, Golden Globe and Critics' Choice-the first African American actor to win the category in the history of the SAGs and Globes.

Best known for his long-running "Funky Winkerbean" comic strip, Batiuk will speak about creating the graphic novel, in particular "Lisa's Story: The Other Shoe," which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2008. A native of northeast Ohio, his "Funky Winkerbean" and "Crankshaft" comic strips are carried in more than 400 newspapers worldwide.
