BW English education grad honored for STEM-integrated language arts class
In the classroom of Candace Hisey '13, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the humanities rightfully go hand in hand. Hisey's STEM-integrated language arts course for her sophomore students, which she designed and implemented herself, has earned her a 2019 Ohio Excellence in STEM Teaching Award.
Excellence in the integrated classroom
The statewide recognition honors a teacher who goes above and beyond with STEM-integrated teaching that encourages innovation, learning and growth in students. The award announcement recognizes Hisey as a teacher who "engages students in inquiry-based learning to develop creativity, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills."
A teacher at Bio-Med Science Academy in Rootstown, Ohio, Hisey combines STEM concepts and creative expression for her students through projects such as "Dance Your Reaction," "The Museum of the Chemical Elements" and a "Science Friday" each week.
Additionally, her students analyzed the gaps in STEM fields - such as the low engagement of women of color - and designed an intervention plan for elementary or middle school students.
BW arts and sciences inspiration
Hisey, who studied English and adolescent/young adult education, credits her time at BW with inspiring her integrated teaching style.
She shares in her teaching bio, "BW's liberal arts environment inspired me to look beyond my subject area and pursue a teaching career that focused on integrated learning."
