Pediatric patients feel like stars with help of BW alumna
Finding a way to connect passion and vocation can be a challenge, but Becca Wagner '13, a public relations graduate, has found the art of communications can be good medicine for hospitalized kids. Wagner is a studio media specialist and a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) at Seacrest Studios in Children's National Hospital located in Washington, D.C.
Seacrest Studios are broadcast media centers within pediatric hospitals. The Ryan Seacrest Foundation (RSF) provides these studios for patients to explore the creative realms of radio, television and new media. RSF's goal is to "contribute positively to the healing process for children and their families during their stay by developing these centers to bring an uplifting spirit to the hospital community."
Delivering dreams and wishes
Wagner produces, creates and schedules over 20 hours of live content weekly to be heard by more than 320 patients and families. She also serves as on-air talent and has interviewed at least 100 celebrities.
Some of her favorite experiences have been meeting a First Lady and having an "improv-off" with a "Saturday Night Live" star. But the most meaningful times are when she can help a patient.
She says, "One Christmas, a patient was not able to be home, so we recreated their holiday experience in the studio. We decorated a tree, wrapped presents and - with the help of their family - we acted out all their at-home traditions. Making even the biggest dreams come true is the goal of the studio, and it is truly an honor to be a part of."
Big impact, BW beginnings
The New York Times, People and Entertainment Tonight have all profiled the work that Wagner has done through Seacrest Studios at Children's National Hospital. All of them highlight the fantastic effects this studio has had on the health journey of patients.
"Without Baldwin Wallace, I would have never ended up in this position." Wagner says, "The education I received from Julie Miller and many others in the public relations department was invaluable."
Wagner also credits her time in the BW chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha, which enabled her to connect to an inclusive summer camp for children with serious illnesses. She gained valuable experience over three summers at Serious Fun Children's Network.
