BW grad finds success 'giving voice' to young international athletes
A marketing and public relations alumnus is channeling his love for sports and media into a globetrotting career.
Holden Sloan George Daly '19 was drawn back overseas after studying abroad during his senior year at Baldwin Wallace University.
A Vermilion, Ohio, native, Daly earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at BW with a major in marketing and a minor in public relations. He was also a student-athlete running cross country and track and field while overcoming a hidden disability.
Valuing hard work
Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of five, Daly won a Silver Medal at the 2016 Rio U.S. Paralympic Trials and was also invited to represent the United States in the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Youth Sports Games in Ireland the summer before his senior year.
He told The Exponent at the time, "Don't confuse hard work with talent. ... A lot of people mistake hard workers as talented. It's about how you apply yourself, that's what makes you successful."
International career
Daly's hard work led him to earn a master's degree from Solent University in Southampton, England, following his graduation from BW.
He then landed his current job as a digital marketing executive at The Twedex Group based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Daly manages the World School Games and Gulf Youth Sports sub-groups for The Twedex Groups.
Highlighting young athletes
As part of his responsibilities, Daly conducts The World School Games Podcast, which helps provide a voice to young athletes competing in international venues.
Daly recently went to Dubai at the end of January to cover the U11 edition of The World School Games as a sideline reporter.
"It was great to cover youth sports because there is a lot of emotion in the games," says Daly. "You can tell every athlete has worked incredibly hard to get to this point."
Addicted to challenge
On top of all of Daly's achievements, he also created sports documentaries on a few fellow Paralympic athletes. He also was able to do his final documentary project in America on the Team USA Paralympian.
Daly also offers some advice for BW students, "Take up opportunities that sound extremely challenging. … Once you accomplish something big outside your comfort zone in something you are passionate about, challenges just become a fun thrill to achieve; you get addicted to it."
